The Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art was founded in 1958 and is located at Dr. D. N. Road, Mumbai – 400 001. The institute has its own website where students can find more information about the campus and its programs.

In 1958, a division occurred where the Departments of Architecture and Applied Art were separated. As a result, one became known as the Sir J. J. School of Architecture and the other was renamed as the Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art.

History

The origins of the Institute of Applied Art can be traced back to the establishment of its sibling institution, the Sir J. J. School of Art, in 1857. The Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art commenced its activities within the premises of the School of Art in 1935 and gained recognition as an independent institute in 1961.

During the the school was threatened with closure. At the time the school was run by the and its funding came directly from the government. In preparation for the looming war many committees were set up to review excess government expenditure and divert money to defense needs. The scrutiny of one such “Thomas Committee” fell on the Sir J. J. School of Art. The committee recommended that the school be shut down, claiming that it only contributed to furthering personal talents of artists and was of no use to society in general.

The introduction of the Commercial Art Section (CAS) at Sir J. J. School of Art gained popularity among aspiring artists, as it provided a direct opportunity for them to earn a living after completing the course. Consequently, the CAS started receiving more applications from students than the main part of the institute. This happened around the time when India achieved independence. The government, which was still responsible for running the school, decided to separate and establish an independent institution called Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art specifically for CAS. Professor V.N Adarkar was appointed as its first director and later became its principal.

Later history

V. N. Adarkar served as the inaugural dean of the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School Of Art. Over the years, notable individuals such as H. G. Hanmante, Prof. Kamat, and M. G. Rajadhyaksha have also held this position with distinction. Currently, Santosh Kshirsagar is serving as the dean of the institute.

Throughout its existence, the Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art has actively participated in various initiatives aimed at promoting social awareness. These projects have encompassed a wide range of topics, such as educating the public about the Five-Year Plan in the 1950s, raising awareness about the beauty and significance of our Himalayas in 1963, and organizing an International Tourist Fair in Bombay in 1965.
